If you happen to find yourself at Camp this winter, you might notice something unusual about both of our lakes…..less water. I can assure you that there is nothing wrong and this is actually one of the many winter tasks we perform to help ensure Camp is looked after during the winter months.

Each November, Mike Dzwill, Camps Property Director actually lowers the level of both lakes…but why? I asked Mike this week why we lower the lakes.

The lakes are lowered for a handful of reasons each year, mostly to combat the possibility of snow melt, but also to help preserve our swimming docks. When ice forms (which it always does) on the surface of the lake, there can be between 4-8 inches of solid ice which can cause the wood pylons to move as the ice will fluctuate in size. As the ice age taught us, large pieces of ice have no problem moving the earth, so it will not have a problem moving the docks. By lowering the lakes to just below the docks, this helps us ensure that no ice will form around the wood pylons, thus saving the docks for the kids to enjoy each summer.
