Each year we wrap up the summer by hosting Labor Day Family Camp for families and friends to spend some quality time at YMCA Camps of Medford. This year is special to us because it marks the third year in a row in which we have had an increase in new families attend Labor Day Family Camp.

On Saturday morning when I walked into the Ockanickon DH for breakfast, I was amazed to see how many tables were filled and how many people were sitting in those seats. Because of the amount of people, one decision we made was to match new families with older families during meals. This has lead to everybody feeling more comfortable and having more fun.

For me, I have spent the majority of the weekend sitting in the Trading Post and playing carpet ball with the occasional family camper (I’m yet to win) and I have been able to have some great conversations with some new and retuning families.

With each family I have spoken to, it’s been a pleasure to see how many new families we have been able to have at camp this year. While most of our new families are from word of mouth, we were happy to be able to host a handful of families from YMCA Camp Mason in North Jersey, who had to close their camp because of Hurricane Irene last weekend.

Another great addition to Family Camp Weekend has been the new waterslide…which we decided to keep up through the weekend to enjoy. As one family camper told me yesterday; “I’m going to spend the entire weekend on that slide…it’s so much fun!”
