Hello Everyone!

It’s Kayla Borden, the Mohawk Village Chief. As you can see, today has been very busy at Matolly for the girls! The weather was great, and dinner was definitely more exciting than usual.

The Mohawk village participated in a self-esteem workshop for an evening activity that has brought us all much closer. The evening began with a few icebreakers and was followed by three rotations. Girls found inspiration within themselves and others by analyzing images, defining their own beauty, and creating friendly reminders for each other. At the end of the summer we plan to make a book with some of the projects the girls do during the workshop. It will begin with “We are beautiful because…” and each girl from sessions 2, 3 and 4 will have her own page. We wrapped up the night with a huge spider web connecting the entire village with yarn. The yarn was cut into bracelets and anklets as a reminder of all we have accomplished together.

I hope everyone else had an exciting day! I’d like to close with a quote from the night:

“Let’s get one thing straight. You are not your hair—frizzy, smooth or limp. You are not your feet—colossal, average or tiny. You are not your thighs—scrawny, muscular or dimpled. You are not your looks.

What you are is far more than the eye can see. You are your culture. You are your history. You are your quirks. You are your talents. You are your goals and accomplishments. You are your relationships. You are your spirit.

And absolutely none of these things can be judged by a photograph.”

I’ll try to add a few pictures in the morning!
