What’s in the Greenhouse!

By |2012-04-15T17:19:59-04:00April 15th, 2012|

It was an amazing week over at the Camp greenhouse! This past week the greenhouse received a new fence, potting soil, and a bountiful amount of new baby plants! A huge thanks to Jamie and Jeff for helping put the new fence up, which has given our greenhouse a private area to help seeds grow. Even bigger thanks to Dave, Ruben and Sophia for planting peppers, lettuce, cucumbers and plenty of perennials to help make Camp look even more beautiful!

So Fresh and So Clean!

1 part bleach, 10 parts water. Add pollen, stink bugs, spider webs, dirty socks, and a whole bunch of dirt. What do you get? That's right, James Otwell, Rich Rupert, and myself spent the day opening up the camp cabins for the Spring. What goes into getting the cabins ready? I'm glad you asked. Each mattress is wiped down with a bleach solution, as well are the canvas' that they lay on. Cabins are swept from every nook and corner and all the little critters that made the villages their home are quietly evicted and given more appropriate living quarters. [...]

What’s in the greenhouse?

By |2012-04-07T17:54:00-04:00April 7th, 2012|

So……last summer some of the boys from Ocky did me a huge favor and built our very first greenhouse! Unfortunately, the next couple of months were very quiet for the greenhouse and it sat lonely and unfilled. There was a time when the greenhouse had an avocado plant, but over time the cold winter was too much for this tropical plant and the plant moved on. Again, the greenhouse sat alone, waiting for its warm insides to help build new plant life. Then a couple of weeks ago, three famous farmers came to the greenhouse and started to place seeds [...]

Camp is just for the summer, right?

By |2012-03-27T08:52:36-04:00March 27th, 2012|

Wrong. Camps all over the country serve as the outdoor classroom, an extension of the science, math, and physical education curriculums throughout the year. Outdoor education programs are a valuable way to create closer relationships within the learning community, experience character development, and reinforce lessons being taught in the classroom. Students are kinesthetic learners and need hands-on, active learning opportunities. We have begun collecting data from all of our students in outdoor education programs and are beginning to find very interesting trends. Students that participate in our programs overwhelmingly have stated that; they learn more about their strengths while at [...]

Frank A. DeMartini Craft Center

By |2012-02-04T15:25:22-05:00February 4th, 2012|

In the days following the demolition of the Old Arts & Crafts building, we got a lot of positive and negative comments. While most people were sad to see a piece of Camp history become history, many people were excited to see such a great addition to Camp.   […]

As some of you might have noticed, Camp has a new building in the works! The Frank A. DeMartini Craft Center will be located where the old arts & crafts building once stood. This amazing building, which is slated to officially open in March has been under construction for a little over 4 weeks and this week marked two important additions; heat/ac and water! Up next will be the application of the outside wood, windows, and then doors. If all goes to plan, the DeMartini building we soon be holding thousands of happy staff and campers!

Roll Up Your Sleeves

By |2011-10-15T17:50:13-04:00October 15th, 2011|

As some of you might have noticed, today was our fall Roll Up Your Sleeves or RUYS. Unlike our traditional RUYS which has been a full weekend in the past. This weekend’s RUYS was a single day. We would like to thank all the families and Horizon Health Care for coming out today to help us clean, paint, plant, and repair. In total, we had around 40 people come and volunteer their time to help make camp a little cleaner and a little better. Interested in our programs? Please head to www.ycamp.org to find out more about or programs.
