The Horseback Riding program allows campers to learn the fundamentals of riding and horse care.

YMCA of the Pines partners with Pony World Adventure to provide horseback riding lessons for attendees of Summer Camp sessions at Camp Ockanickon, Camp Matollionequay and Lake Stockwell Day Camp. The program is for basic and intermediate level campers enrolled in our full-length camp program (mini-campers are not eligible). An additional fee is charged.

As with all of our camp programs, safety and fun are the main priorities. Pony World Adventure will provide a secure environment during horseback riding lessons for students to work, learn and grow … all while having fun and developing new relationships.

Horseback riding lessons are open to boys and girls, ages 5-16, and provide the opportunity for developing equestrians to become more confident in their abilities and comfortable within a community of riders. All lessons work with the camper’s progression in horseback riding.

All campers who participate in the equestrian program are required to wear long pants as well as sturdy, hard-sole shoes or boots with ½ inch heel.

Lessons are for one hour a day, five days a week during the camp session, Monday through Friday. Day camp campers will attend the equestrian program during the camp day, such that the program is open for bus campers. Equestrian campers will be absent from some other activities and the missed activities cannot be made up. For both day camp and overnight campers, credit will not be given for missed lessons.

Campers will learn to handle horses both on the ground and in the saddle by grooming, tacking and untacking their horse before and after their horse riding lesson.

Intermediate and advanced riders will learn training techniques in and out of the saddle.

Campers are encouraged to participate in other aspects of horse care, including feeding, bathing and providing medical care … all under the supervision of experienced instructors.

Campers are educated in the proper use of horse equipment, such as “sport” boots and “splint” boots, different horse bits for different horses and saddle fittings. This “Total Horsemanship” approach gives students a sense of responsibility and a well-rounded education.

Classes are set up to match riders to each other’s skill levels, whether they be absolute beginners or seasoned jumpers.

Campers who take part in these lessons will be equipped with the tools and knowledge to achieve their goals both in and out of the horse riding ring.

All riders must wear a safety helmet while mounted. Camp provides helmets but it is permissible for your camper to bring his or her own, as long as it is SEI/ASTM certified.
