So I have shared some insight about Pinterest & Facebook and now get ready to talk about Twitter! I have always considered myself tech-savy, I own a PC laptop, an IMac, and an IPhone, but it was not always this way. I got my 1st cell phone in 2000, but it was issued to me from work (remember the Nokia 6190…even better do you remember Omnipoint?) and I was all-about VHS until 2005 when I bought my 1st DVD player. Chef Jason, if you read this, please try to skip this sentence….I did not really buy into the technology fad until I was given a Blackberry for work back in 2006. For the life of me I cannot remember the model number, but if I had it today, I would probably use it to keep my couch from rocking….I now have a nice IPhone which sits next to me on the couch (Chef Jason…I’m slowly becoming a believer!).

When I think about social media, my mind turns back to the days of Friendster and Myspace and the limited amount of time I really spent on both. Maybe it’s because Facebook is much bigger and better then Friendster & Myspace, maybe it’s because more people have access to the Internet, maybe it’s because we now find ourselves addicted to being plugged into the Internet all the time, who knows? What I do believe is that social media is an important part of our lives and we have to take it for both the good and bad.

Twitter…..Chef Jason offered me tips and advice to write this blog so the pressure is on to get this one right. I do not believe in Twitter, but the masses (600 million and growing according to hypebot.com) absolutely prove me wrong in a big way. I remember sitting in a seminar at the Northeast YMCA Camp Conference in 2010, learning about Twitter, how it helps businesses, how it shares information, how it works. I was interested, but not bought into it, but I still set-up a Camp twitter account just to be on the safe side. I also set-up my own personal Twitter account and Chef Jason is always happy to point out my lack of tweeting (every couple of months).

@ymcaockanickon has sat dormant for the past 10 months, our last tweet was on December 4, 2010 and we had to get a new password to access the account. Three weeks ago when we started to talk about our social media, Chef Jason jumped when we came to the topic of Twitter. His idea was to tweet menu items, pictures of meals during the summer to parents who cannot have as much fun as their kids, because Camp is for kids. Ultimately our goal will be to arm at least three summer staff with the ability to tweet during the summer, Chef Jason will focus on meals and the two other staff will focus on everything else that makes Camp awesome.

Chef Jason has spent the past couple of weeks using our other social media sites to spread the word that our Twitter account will be active soon again. We hope that if you use Twitter, you head over to: https://twitter.com/#!/ymcaockanickon and start following us… at least by June….when we plan on going crazy with Twitter! I really want to be wrong on this one…so please help Chef Jason prove me wrong.
