SMILE

A smile cost nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, And none is so poor,  that he can be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, And is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, And it is nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot [...]

What Do You Like About Camp?

By |2011-03-08T06:48:38-05:00March 8th, 2011|

"What I like about camping is you can get really dirty. Either you're all by yourself, so no one else sees you, or everyone you're with is just as dirty as you are, so nobody cares." ~ former Boy Scout and camper

By |2011-03-06T17:00:20-05:00March 6th, 2011|

Hello all... This weeks Learn to Cook aspiring Chefs got their hands really messy!! Homemade pizza crust was the order of the day and let me tell you, the results were delicious! Success

Ralph Waldo Emerson really knew how to do a Though of the Day.  This one always reminds me of Camp: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have succeeded." By |2011-03-02T13:49:17-05:00March 2nd, 2011|

Two frogs fell into a bowl of milk. Having swum around the bowl, they realized that the edge of the bowl was too high and steep for them to get out unaided. The first frog, realizing that it was useless to waste his energy by continuing to swim since that would not get him out of the bowl, gave up swimming and drowned. The second frog persevered, refused to give in, and gradually the milk turned into butter, until the frog was able to use it as a foothold to jump out of the bowl. The moral of this little [...]

Now that we have your attention … Did you know that camp has a series of Learn To programs? If you follow the blog you have probably heard about Jason and Nick’s cooking series that is underway right now. In six days YMCA Camp Ockanickon is rolling out the next installment of this exciting series, Intro to Wilderness Survival, beginning on Monday, March 7. Kayla Borden, our Recreational Specialist and resident survival expert has been hard at work preparing the program. A little survival tip I picked up from a thru-hiker I met while on the Ranger trip two summers [...]
