We are looking for a highly motivated team member to join us in delivering life-changing, mission-driven camp experiences to youth and families at YMCA Camp Ockanickon, Inc. The Outdoor Center has an amazing program that provides day and overnight camping to schools and other organizations with a focus on building healthier communities and stronger relationships.
We need your help in serving 20,000 youth and families each year in summer camp, school camping programs, teen adventure trips, and community and family retreat programs.
As the Assistant Outdoor Center Director, a typical day might include:

  • Congratulating an instructor for helping a struggling child up the climbing wall.
  • Call the organizer of a school retreat, and walk them through some program choices.
  • Offer a team-building facilitator tips for debriefing a challenge course element.
  • Send a participant directions for registering for an upcoming family weekend.
  • Run a quality check on the aquatics team.
  • Brainstorm program strategies with team members for an upcoming special needs school group.

This job is for you if:

You like helping people. You get a kick out of getting kids to those aha! moments. you are patient, level-headed, and cool under pressure. Teaching someone something new makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

You enjoy solving problems. You love taking on challenges and finding creative solutions. You don’t get flustered easily. If you don’t know the answer, you’ll dig until you find it.

You pay attention to the details. You stay focused, strive to be better, and learn from your mistakes.

You think on your feet. You like learning new things, and you can learn quickly. When things change, you know how to roll with the punches.

You communicate clearly. You write well. You speak eloquently. You can explain just about anything to anyone, and you’re comfortable communicating in writing and on the phone.

You are motivated and driven. You volunteer for new challenges without waiting to be asked. You’re going to take ownership of the time you spend with others and truly make a difference.

To land this gig:

You need to have some experience leading and helping others in a professional setting, preferably at a camp. Internships, volunteer work, and side projects count. Just make sure we can see where you picked up you helping-people super powers somewhere in your cover letter or resume.
