Helping Hands

Posted by on May 31, 2012

There is only 25 days until the first day of Day Camp and there are still many things to be done. We are still finalizing schedules, cleaning up and organizing our ordered supplies, and planning our special events for each week. I am very grateful to have such a great staff that is willing to go above and beyond what is expected. I couldn’t ask for a better group to be dedicated to Camp than these certain staff members. A big special thanks goes to four of Lake Stockwell’s leadership staff, Steph Ward, Sam Smith, Josh Matukonis and Tom Logue, as they have helped assist me in cleaning out the Arts & Crafts closet, finalizing special events and moving a four foot white board to hang in our lodge. Thank you guys of your hard work and dedication to...

The Farm

Posted by on May 29, 2012

This topic might me a little off the beaten path, but give it some time … it might grow on you. One of my favorite things to do during those few moments when camp isn’t buzzing with campers is to garden. My house is fortunate enough to have about 100 square feet of gardening space, enclosed by a 3 1/2 foot fence I put up last Spring. I affectionately call this small plot of land “The Farm.” Last year I had some limited success with a number of vegetables on The Farm and have explanded this year’s crop to include, pole beans, cucumbers, tomotoes, carrots, cabbage, radish, lettuce, a variety of peppers and herbs, and even a couple melons – my first attempt at fruit in the Jersey Pines. I’ve also got a few scattered potted plants, and a couple hostas. Here’s a one little tip that I’ve picked up this year that could help any gardener. When you boil or steam your vegetables, don’t throw that leftover water down the drain. Use it to water your potted plants, window boxes, or virtually anything else around the garden. The plants will soak up the “veggie soup” and you’ll have some pretty amazing results. That’s all for now, I’ll get back to talking about camp next week....

Memorial Day…

Posted by on May 27, 2012

Hello all… On this Memorial Day weekend I just wanted to send out my heartfelt thanks to all the men and women of service past, present and future. These brave men and women sacrifice so much and in many cases sacrifice everything in defense of our own lives, liberties and freedoms. There are two such people very close to me that I personally consider role models and heroes. One is my one and only brother, Jared. He is a Major in the United States Air Force who flies the HH60 Pavehawk which is a search and rescue helicopter in the traditionally “fixed wing” Air Force. He has been in and out of country for multiple deployments in to our various war zones since his graduation from the United States Air Force Academy in 2002. He has flown more missions then I’m sure he cares to count and has done untold good, rescuing soldiers and civilians who needed help desperately. It doesn’t take a single day on the calender to make me proud to call him my brother… my hero. The other person is one of our own staff members here at Camp. Rich Rupert has been a fixture around Camp for what seems like forever. Taking a hiatus from his physical presence here at Camp, Rich became a United States Marine… but I know well that Camp was never far from his heart. Rich had returned to us a while back and is now one of our top Recreational Specialists and will be in command of our Challenge Course program this summer. Rich’s vibrant spirit, high energy and pure unfiltered exuberance is infectious and inspiring to me and thousands of kids that come through our Camp programs all year long. It doesn’t take a single day on the calender to call him my friend… my role model. Please take time this weekend to remember all our men and women of service both with us and those that have fallen. Without their sacrifices we would not be the great Nation that we are. Be good… Chef...

Cherokee Beach…almost ready for swimming!

Posted by on May 26, 2012

This past week, Cherokee Beach received some huge upgrades to help facilitate an increase in both Lake Stockwell Day Camp and our Membership program. Huge thanks to Dave, Paul, and Rob for installing our newest water inflatable (check the picture on the May 21st blog posting) & Jamie and Chris for spending hours clearing brush to open up the whole entire beach area. Also the Haddonfield Y’s Men who helped build our new playground and over 22 tons of new sand which was spread around both the beach and the playground. Looking for a great place to spend your weekends this summer? Be sure to check out our amazingly priced membership rate which allows access to Cherokee Beach and our new white trail loop for walking, running, biking and of course, do walking. Have a boat and love to fish? Well we have plenty of fish in the lake! Hope to see you this...
